Problem with my vacuum chamber?
I have removed the gas inlet for my vacuum chamber and closed it with a seal. I did this because I wanted to check if my chamber had any problems with my gas inlet valves. ( I had problems of high pressures previously which I suspected to be because of these mechanical gas inlet valves). Now, after sealing my chamber I have pumped it down to check if the problem of high pressures persisted. I have encountered a new problem now. How can I enter air into my chamber and open it now?The gas inlets are closed. I used a rotary pump to pump it down. How can I bring the chamber to normal air pressure?
Before you go adding or subtracting more components, you should make some measurements of the leak up rate. Virtual leaks slow down over time, real leaks do not. If you don't understand this, do some reading about basic vacuum technology.
If I understand, you pumped down your vacuum chamber and you have no way to backfill it to atm. Depending on the chamber design, you may be able to remove the screws/bolts on a small flange or feedthru and open it to air. At ~ 15 psi (atm pressure), it does not take a very big flange to have hundreds of lbs of force holding it closed. If you do not have any small ports that can be cracked open in this manner, then it gets more drastic.
The quick and bad way is to simply turn the pump off leaving the blanking valve open, air will leak backwards thru the pump, likely contaminating your chamber and everything in it with pump oil.
The better way but longer and much more expensive... Blank off the chamber from the pump, shut off the pump. This will allow air to backfill into the lines between the pump and the valve, hopefully this will only contaminate the vacuum lines from the pump to the blank off valve (and this happens everytime you shut off your pump anyway). Disconnect the pump from the blank off valve (leaving the chamber under vacuum) and install a length of vacuum line with a needle valve to the air and a second blank off valve. This way, you can pump down the new length of vac line, open the original blank off valve, close the new blank off valve and backfill the chamber thru the new needle valve.
