Portable RS-485/422/232 Fiber Converter from GAO

Toronto, Canada – GAO Comm (www.GAOComm.com) offers this fiber converter series (GAO227) equipped with multiple interfaces to handle RS-485, RS-422 or RS-232 serial interfaces and multi-mode or single-mode fiber. This series of fiber converters is widely used in various industrial process control, distributed data acquisition, and is particularly suitable for power system automation, traffic controls and other applications.

The fiber converter series extends serial transmission distance up to 2km on multi-mode fiber or up to 20km on single-mode fiber. It features high isolation voltage, anti-electromagnetic interference and avoids lightning by using optical fiber as a communication transmission medium.

The converter series automatically detects the serial signal baud rate which allows for the continued transmission of a signal through the RS-485, RS-422 or RS-232 to fiber converter, even after a device’s baud rate is changed. The fiber converters have a maximum rate of 500kbps.

For more information on GAO227 fiber converter series, please visit www.GAOComm.com or contact Sales@GAOComm.com.

Loopback Test: A Fiber Optic Transceiver Performance Verification

A hardware or software method, a loopback test, feeds a received signal or data back to the sender. It is used as an aid in debugging physical connection problems.

The fiber optic transceiver is the most essential part in fiber optic communication network equipment. It operates precisely the same like your computer's Ethernet card. A transmitter port and a receiver port are the two parts of a fiber optic transceiver. As the name implies, the transmitter port sends out laser signals to a linked transceiver, and the receiver port receives the laser signals from the other transceiver.

Normally, a fiber optic module is used in every fiber optic transceiver manufacturing provider. It is to make sure that a transceiver is performing perfectly well as made, instead of utilizing another transceiver as its partner. Mainly, a loopback module right away routes the laser signal from the transmitter port back to the receiver port. With this, we can compare the transmitted pattern with the received pattern to make certain they are identical and are working faultlessly.

There are different types of loopback modules available today, but the most popular types are SC, LC and MRRJ connector types. However, each connector type is divided by the fiber type, connector polish type and attenuation.

Fiber type: Three fiber types are available for each connector type. These are 50/125um multimode, 62.5/125um multimode and 9/125um single mode.

Connector Polish Type: Only PC polish is available for multimode type fibers. On the other hand, the single mode fiber has two connector polish types available: the UPC polish and the APC polish.

Working Wavelength: Another factor in choosing the correct fiber optic loopback module for your specific application is the working wavelength. Available wavelengths for the multimode appliacations are 850nm, 1310nm; and the only available wavelength for single mode applications is 1550nm.

Attenuation, because the receiver port cannot handle very high power, you can identify how the signal power level should be lowered. In a real fiber optic network, there are always attenuations introduced by fibers, equipment and physical environment. Thus, the transmitter power is attenuated to a safe level through the network before reaching the other receiver. Attenuation usually should be added to guardshelter the receiver because you are routing the transmitter directly back to the receiver.

The amount of attenuation that must be added relies on your transceiver type and should be determined upon by you. From 0dB, 2dB, to 24dB, you have a broad range of attenuation options for you to choose.

What's more, there is a wider range of fiber optics devices like transceiver modules, base converters and fiber optic cables available for your every communication network needs. It's up to you to decide which ones you want.

What is the difference between single and multi-mode fibre optic cables?

Single mode is one pair and multimode is several pair cable.
Basic difference is several connections may be drawn through multimode fiber optic cable.
