Where to find a decent microscope?
We are expecting our first child and plan to home school. So, we are trying to build up things we feel we will need. My wife really enjoyed Microbiology in college. She'd had one of those kids microscopes while growing up that just didn't work well for anything. What we'd like is something similar to what would be used in College Microbiology. Any ideas for where we would find such a thing?
It will be a few years before we need it, but it's been awhile since my wife took Micro and she'd like to get back into practice with using the microscope..
She was one of those kids that was talking in sentences at 6 months old. SO, we don't know if we'll be having a kid like her or one like me that waited till he was 2 to talk..lol

EBay. I want one that costs about $1500 and has phase contrast lighting. This would be comparable to what we used in college on lab days when we were looking at bacteria.
But realistically, you can get something your kid can use for under $100 (not kidding -- when I was a kid, I used my dad's old 'scope and the receipt was in the box -- less than $8). It won't be good for looking at bacteria, but it's great for looking at Paramecium aurelia and for that big box of prepared slides you'll be buying your daughter that has mounted fleas, brine shrimp, butterfly wings, pollen grains.

That depends on you. If you talk to your kid a lot, she'll be talking sooner. Use complete sentences. Also, have classical music playing in your house. The brain tries to make sense of it, and grows all sorts of connections that can make your kid appear to be mentally gifted. Take it from one who's been there.
