Magnifying Glass- How to Select the Right One for You
Magnifying glasses have been around for thousands of years. They were discovered by the Romans in the first century AD. In 13th-century a person named Roger Bacon described and advocated the use of a magnifying lens to improve reading. If you find that you just need something to help you see detail a bit more clearly, a good pocket magnifying glass can be the secret tool you need. Even the most eagle-eyed professional numismatists will sometimes "cheat" and use a portable magnifier to supplement their normal vision.
Making sure that you get a great deal on one is not hard because there are a number of different styles of magnifying glass that you can pick from: hand-held , stand, illuminated stand, hands free LED magnifying glass, & illuminated pocket. Magnifying glasses vary in both size and magnifying capabilities. More precise lenses can magnify 10X, 20X or more, while the average lens magnifies 3X or 5X. In terms of size, magnifying glasses can be extremely small (like the magnifying glasses in Swiss Army knives) or quite large (like industrial engineering magnifying glasses).
When choosing a hand magnifier, keep in mind that these lenses come in different powers or strengths. It is important to keep in mind that as the power of the lens gets stronger; the diameter of the lens gets smaller. Another way to say this is, the larger the lens, the weaker the power will be. Also keep in mind that the higher the magnification power, the closer you will need to hold the portable magnifier to your eye and the closer your eye will have to be to the object you are viewing. For this reason (and also because of the smaller lens size), higher power reading magnifiers are not necessarily the most comfortable for reading for the distance from the paper can become frustrating, but some might find them necessary to see. If you're not sure what magnification you need, try starting with a mid-range power magnifier -- 4x to 5x magnifying power.
Another popular type of magnifying glass is called jeweler's loupe that is similar in composition to a microscope. The jeweler's loupe typically provides magnification of 10 times. The lens on a loupe is usually much smaller than that on a lollipop-style magnifying glass and requires both the object being observed and the eye of the observer to be very close to the loupe for proper magnification.
Magnifying glasses have many uses. It is not hard to find a great pocket magnifying glass that suits you and your needs the best. Today, you can find them on the internet or in some stores very easily and conveniently.

I want to test sea water for plankton at a very low cost or complexity!
Well, a lot of plankton is big, so yes, but not all. At 60x a large (10 um) eukaryote will be a 1/2 mm dot.
