Sharps Waste Disposal Procedure
Sharps waste are considered to be dangerous to the community so focused concentration should be given for their collection and disposal. In some countries, they have their own set of rules and regulations that every voter should follow in their disposal of sharps waste. They give this consideration so as to lessen the danger of the people that are at tasks to collect and handle the sharps waste of the city.
The numerous wastes that are included in the category of sharps waste will include needles (if it is covered by a plastic guard, attached to a syringe or not), IV tubing with needle attached, dispensable glass pipettes, cover slips, glass slides and glass Pasteur pipettes, , knifes, razor blades, lancets, and broken glass and splintered plastics that are contaminated with blood or other doubtless transmissible materials. If there are non-contaminated broken lab glasses or plastic such as beakers and bottles, then they are not considered as sharps wastes.
There are three classes of sharps waste and they will include sharps, radioactive sharps, or chemical sharps. Sharps are wastes that were either poisoned or not that have biological material in them. Radioactive sharps are sharps contaminated with radioactive material. And chemical sharps are sharps that have chemical materials in them like damaged mercury thermometers or syringes that are polluted with chemo drugs.
Even if there are sharps containers that are placed in different areas of the lab, you should remember that these containers are for sharps waste only and they should not be used in other purposes. If you may use these sharps waste as regular trash then this may add significant costs to waste management. Sharps wastes are treated differently compared with non-sharp biohazard waste or regular wastes. These things shouldn't be ditched as sharps waste: gloves, paper towels, lab glass (this may include pipettes and pipette tips), chemical bottles, Petri dishes or plastic vials, culture plates and conical tubes.
The process to be followed when collecting needles and syringes would be slightly the same with other classes of sharps waste. The sharps waste should be collected in specialize containers. You'll then write a label that may include the date on which the container is sealed and the name of the wastes within the container. Place the container in the hallway in which it can be simply picked up.
