The Proper Use and Care of Medical Instruments

If you're a medical student or a doctor then you may need to know how to use basic surgical instruments big mis-conception is that only surgeons need to know about surgical instruments. Sometimes in a clinic you may be faced with a case where you may use surgical instruments. Therefore knowledge about common medical instruments will keep you 1 step ahead.

Dissecting forceps is one of the many most familiar surgical instruments. These forceps also is known as the Mitchell's forceps. It's a non-dissecting forceps and can be used to hold things like blood vessels. You may wonder how to hold dissecting forceps? You want to hold it between your thumb and index finger... kinda of like how you would a pen.

Let us move on to a different category which is scissors. Unfortunately unlike most surgical instrument sets this does not fall into the orthopedic instruments category. A scissor is usually used to cut structure. The 2 different types of scissors are curved scissor and straight. One of the most common scissor is called the metzenbaum. Its mainly used for cutting more finer tissue such as a bladder or muscle tissue.

The best way to hold the scissors straight is to put your index finger on the joint of the scissors. This makes sure the scissors is more firmly held and keeps a more controlled movement. If your not careful and dont hold the scissors appropriately then you may end up cutting more of what you intend to do. So always support the scissors with your finger from the reverse hand. Another way to regulate how much you want cut is to place your opposite finger at a distance which will help guide your cut better.

surgical instruments are handled in three different phases. Pre-operative, intraoperative and post-operative task. The mixture of these three phases is referred to as the instrument cycle.

Preoperatively the medical instrument sets and other supplies are planed by the surgeon for his own choice. You should remove the surgical instrument sets after the medical container is opened. Surgical instruments and other medical supplies are gathered and prepared for use on the back table and mayo stand.

Intraoperative surgical instrument handling involves a complex set of critical thinking and complex task. The STSR must be able to anticipate or predict the needs of the patient or surgical team members. The skill to anticipate these needs is accomplished through knowledge of autonomy and the understanding of any variations that may be necessary to accommodate the patient. It is important that the STSR observe the progression of the procedure to obtain necessary information. The surgeon may request demands verbally or by hand signals. These are the names most commonly used by a surgeon… scalpel, hemostatic clamp, surgical scissors, tissue forceps, free tie, etc.

Hand signals work best because it keeps talking to a minimum. Additionally hand signals often replace verbal request if the patient isn't under general anesthesia. Postoperative instruments handling involves all the steps preparing surgical instruments for use. These steps include cleaning and decontamination, maintenance and inspection, preparation of the set, reassembly of the set, sterilization and storage.

The more knowledge you have of medical equipment. The more you'll be able to make out-of-field analysis and diagnosis for your patients.

Juvenile Warts - What Are They And Also What Can Be Done Concerning Them?

A juvenile wart, which is also known as a flat wart, is actually a benign skin tumor that does not lead to any actual harm. Juvenile warts most frequently affect young children and teenagers. You can find them on a youngster's face, arms, hands, and knees.

The human papilloma virus or HPV is the culprit. This virus enjoys warm, moist settings. So you can contract them in restrooms and around pools.

It typically invades the body via minor cuts or skin abrasions. If you want to reduce the possibility of being exposed to the human papilloma virus, it is imperative that you do not stand in communal showers or on wet floors around swimming pools without shoes or sandals covering your feet.

The human papilloma virus can spread from one person to another. Occasionally, a person can be a carrier of this virus for quite a long time until it turns into an actual wart. This makes it difficult to determine how the virus was contracted.

Even though juvenile warts are not at all dangerous and have extremely little risk for causing other medical problems, they do tend to multiply in number. This wart could also interfere with a child's self-esteem, which is another reason to have it treated.

You can purchase several types of wart treatments over the counter. The truth is, most of them do not really work. While these may kill the wart, it may reappear later. There are wart removers than can be harmful to the surrounding skin.

You can also use electrosurgery, cryosurgery or laser therapy to kill the juvenile wart.

When a wart is treated using electrosurgery, the doctor performs the surgery with a heated needle. This can still be quite painful, even with anesthesia. This method of removal often leaves a scar.

The process when a juvenile wart is frozen is called cryosurgery. An anesthetic is typically applied to the skin and you might need to return for more visits in order to completely eliminate the wart.

Laser therapy uses a light beam to burn the wart. This can become costly, particularly if you have a lot of warts.

Alternative and home treatments for warts are available that may effectively get rid of your juvenile warts. While some traditional methods are very effective, others produce little results.

How do you measure UV absorption/reflection without using UV measuring instruments?

Example of my question: I covered somebody's shoulder with medical tape and put sunscreen lotion on it with 3 different kinds of SPF's and stand out in the sun for 20-30 mins. After standing out in the sun I take off the tape and observe the skin, one patch of skin stays the same, the other patch of skin is slightly different than the other, and the last patch is completely burnt, how do i measure the UV on those patches of skin without using the UV measuring instruments.

There u can get a sliding card card which shows several colours..u can compare it with the skin colour u are asking about..there shows the result...it is not a device it is just a strip of colours...match ur skin colour with the colour u get in the card..it will be valued as 0..then there is written instruction how many time u have to be in sun rays for what time to be..then changing to ur skin colour u can grade the intensity of rays..there is very simple mathematical formula written on it..u can get in medical store or shop...depend which country u r from...hope this will help you to ur quest...be happy..
