Generally you can tell a compound is pure by looking at the range of when it first started melting till when it has completely melted. If a compound for instance has a melting point of 150-151C then it is considered pure. A compound is impure if it has a very broad range i.e. 120-150C and also if the expected melting point is much lower than expected.
This can be explained by looking at how the crystal lattice was formed. A pure compound will melt cleanly because it has a stable structure. For compounds with impurities it's crystal lattice structure would have areas of instability causing it to have the broad range and lower melting points.

ever discovered for splitting oxygen atoms from water molecules — a key
reaction for advanced energy-storage systems, including electrolyzers, to

oxygen at more than 10 times the rate of the best previously known catalyst of

The new compound, composed of cobalt, iron and oxygen with other metals,
splits oxygen from water (called the Oxygen Evolution Reaction, or OER) at a
rate at least an order of magnitude higher than the compound currently
considered the gold standard for such reactions, the team says. The compound’s
high level of activity was predicted from a systematic experimental study that
looked at the catalytic activity of 10 known compounds.
