Grid Tie Inverter
If you’re generating excess power with your solar panels or wind turbines, a grid tie inverter will let you sell this electricity to the utility company.
The 1978 Federal Public Utilities Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA) dictates that everyone in the US has the right to sell renewable energy to their local power company. This law came about after the 1973 Arab oil embargo and is equally welcome today.
If you have solar panels or wind turbines, chances are you already have a standard inverter, which works to convert DC electricity to AC. They also function to convert 12 or 24 volt electricity to 120 volt, for the same reason. Many users of renewable energy systems are missing out on the benefits of another, special type of inverter, though. At 120 volts and 60 cycles per second, the AC electricity you get from a power inverter is pretty much the same as that which comes right from the grid. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that both sorts of electricity are cycling in phase with each other. If your inverter’s electricity is cycling up when the grid’s is cycling down, sending your electricity there won’t work. A grid tie inverter will ensure that your inverter stays in sync with the grid.
A grid tie inverter is useful in other ways as well. In a sense, electricity always goes downhill: it flows from higher voltage to lower voltage. This is what allows you to charge a battery. The electricity flows from the charger, which outputs at high voltage, to the battery, at lower voltage. This also shows why it takes more than 12 volts to charge a 12 volt battery.
For the same reason, you have to have electricity of a slightly higher voltage than that of the grid in order to move your electricity there. A grid tie inverter will make this possible. Any electricity you aren’t using will flow out to the grid, and your power meter will actually run backwards.
The special functions of a grid tie inverter make it more expensive than a regular inverter. However, the investment is justified by the profits that can be gained with the use of a grid tie inverter. Anyone using wind or solar energy should really consider investing in a grid tie inverter.

Why can't we transmit high voltage power using RF waveforms instead of using powerlines?
The intensity decreases as the distance increases. The factor is one over radius squared. At twice the distance one only receives 1/4 the power.
