Total Quality Management at Hewlett Packard: The Internal Customer
A fundamental of Total Quality Management (TQM) is the concept of the internal customer. TQM was a result of the W Demming’s work within Japanese industry after the cessation of World War II. Demming built upon the original Total Quality concept developed by Feigenbaum in the 1950’s and introduced the notion that quality is a strategic activity and originates in upper management attitudes towards quality. Hewlett Packard have a long association with TQM and quality management tools such as Kaizen and were one of the pioneers of the internal customer concept. Starting with the ink cartridges division in Scotland, Hewlett Packard introduced a simple seven point check list to ensure that each function of the organisation was focused its internal customers and made a conscious effort to satisfy the needs of these internal customers. The Hewlett Packard guide was comprised of seven questions which addressed the questions – “what is the purpose of our existence and what can we do to excel at our purpose?”. The seven questions were:
Who are my customers?
What are their needs?
What is my product or service?
What are my customers’ expectations of my service and how will these expectations be measured?
Does my product or service meet their expectations?
What is the process for providing this product or service?
What actions will improve this process?
By asking these questions each function, department and unit was able to understand that their primary purpose was not simply to produce, but to produce for the benefit of others, the internal customer. They could then apply a methodology to solve any problems and improve processes and quality. This is important as many business units can see their own existence and the means to an end – as long as they produce, they are doing their job. A good example of this with external customers is the familiar story of the Ford Model T which took the company from domination to annihilation. Ford refused to consider the needs of the customer and saw the fact that they were producing cars as justification for their existence. However, the product did not meet the requirements of the customer so the product might as well have not been made. In terms of Hewlett Packard, they made sure that the products and services made in one part of the company were done so with the sole aim of satisfying an organisational need in another part of the company.

The Managable And Excellent Performing Hewlett Packard LaserJet 1022 Printer
The HP LaserJet 1022 printer using the LaserJet 1022 laser toners, is fully functional, relatively quick when it comes to print speed, and delivers printouts that are high in quality. It is also easy to pick up and move around and actually looks attractive sitting next to a computer. This monochrome laser unit from Hewlett-Packard also comes in models that are ready to be hooked up to a networked workgroup.
In terms of size, the 1022 is fairly compact and light in weight, coming in at just a shade over 12 pounds. It also is good at delivering printed product at a high rate of speed, bringing its user about 19 pages per minute of quality black-and-white print output with little trouble at all. Make sure to have plentu of HP laser toner on hand. Many printers in this price range are several pages per minute below what the 1022 can do consistently.
The printer can only be hooked up one way to a computer in its standard configuration, but that is not a bad thing when one considers that it makes use of a high-speed USB port. Just use the included CD-ROM to quickly install all driver software along with a handy user's manual, though one will need to supply one's own USB cable as the 1022 doesn't supply one of its own.
Another nice feature of this Hewlett-Packard printer is that it is compatible with both Windows-based operating systems and Mac OS 10.2 and higher platforms. Many HP laser printers at this price point can usually only make use of Windows-based platforms, leaving Mac users out in the cold. That isn't the case with the 1022 series.
The printer comes with a standard 8 MB of memory, but that's no big deal because the printer is made to be what's known as "host-based, " meaning that it will make use of the computer's processing power to perform all print jobs. If it's needed for more than text jobs (that is to say, if it's meant to print out graphics-rich jobs), a handy driver can be downloaded from Hewlett-Packard's website to do so.
There is also a nice 266 MHz processor onboard, meaning that at 1022 will be able to do all of its tasks, prioritize them in and get them out with very little trouble. It also includes a 250-sheet autoload input tray that's complemented by a separate 10-sheet custom slot keep, giving the 1022 a total of 260 sheets of capacity.
Maximum monthly duty cycle when it comes to the 1022 is about 8000 pages, which is usually quite enough for a printer intended to be primarily a Mac or PC-to-printer unit. "Monthly duty cycle" refers to how many sheets the printer can print out on in a single month before needing minor replenishment or maintenance. This is in line with most other printers in this particular category.
At present, prices for the HP LaserJet 1022 printer are coming in at about $190 for a refurbished model and up to $600 for a brand-new model. Keep in mind that it doesn't come with its own USB cable, so be prepared to shell out additional money for one. Still, it's a very lightweight and compact machine that prints out quite quickly, making it well worth the price. If you are printing lots of graphics make sure to have plenty of LaserJet 1022 toner cartridge on hand. The printer toner refill is the ink that the printer uses to print. HP LaserJet printer toners can be found online or in stores.
Does Hewlett Packard HP make their own ink & toner cartridges or do they outsource to third parties?
With all of the advertising about being "green" and to only buy "GENUINE" HP cartridges I am curious if their cartridges are actually made by Hewlett Packard.
Are they made in USA or are they outsourced to China etc?
Hewlett Packard does not make their own toner cartridges or inkjet cartridges. They outsource them to Malaysia (per packaging on my HP ink here at house).
Their claim to "green" isn't substantiated. Their carbon footprint alone is very high because of the long distance traveled from manufacture to end user. Also there are many other more eco-friendly options. There are companies here in the USA that manufacture high quality toners and that are also ISO 14001 certified. Google "Made In USA toner cartridge" and you will get some great options.
