An Affordable Option: Water Filter Replacement Cartridge
Water filter replacement cartridges can cost anywhere from five to twenty dollars according to the type of replacement filter. This seems expensive, however, the buyer must also keep in mind that filters that have to be replaced the most often are found in pitchers and other portable devices, and these only have to be replaced approximately every three months.
Considering that bottled water costs on average about five dollars for a twenty four pack and that pack can be gone in less than a week, which means the consumer is paying at least thirty dollars a month on purified water. That means in the time it takes to replace a five to twenty dollar filter for a water filtration unity, the bottled water consumer has paid almost one hundred dollars on water.
Types of Cartridges
There are three basic types of water filter replacement cartridges on the market today. The most common of these cartridges are used in water pitchers and other portable water filtration devices. Water filter replacement cartridges are also becoming more popularly used in refrigerators to purify the water in the door unit and ice maker.
Reverse osmosis water filter replacement cartridges are usually the more expensive ones on the market. The reason for this is that the membrane has to be carefully formed so that the holes in it are only big enough for a water molecule to get through and no other substances if possible.
These membranes are delicate and must be formed and packed in a specific way. Also, reverse osmosis water filter replacement cartridges are found in more than portable systems, such as point of entry systems and under the sink systems that allow more water to pass through them, thus requiring a different and more advanced water replacement filter.
Another type of water filter replacement cartridge is an absorption cartridge, which uses carbon or granularly activated charcoal. These are normally the types of cartridges that Whirlpool water filter cartridges are made of to go in the doors and ice makers of refrigerators to purify the water that comes out of them. This type of cartridge removes or reduces chlorine in the water which makes it taste better, and also removes other particle matter as well as organic matter such as pesticides.
The third type is the particulate water filter replacement cartridge which acts in much the same was as the one mentioned above. It removes sand, bacteria and pathogens from the water.

The Best Filter Replacement Cartridge
Maintaining your water filter is necessary if you want to continue drinking clean water. Although it can be a bit of a hassle, by maintaining your water filter you will always have access to the cleanest drinking water possible. Even though each filter system has its own specific maintenance method, there comes a time when a new filter replacement cartridge needs to be put in.
Whole house filters are examples of top of the range filters that only need little maintenance; they typically have a self cleaning mechanism attached into the filter which cleans the filters every time water is being pumped out. These types of filters require changing every 3 years but they contain an inbuilt pre-sediment filter replacement cartridge that needs to be changed every three to six months. It is important to change these cartridges because once they are worn out they will not be able to properly filter sediment and bacteria that are present in the water and you will be in danger of drinking contaminated water.
The Whirlpool Company has replaced their inexpensive whole house filters with a new Energy Star model that costs a lot more. Its main advantage is that it's self-cleaning and never requires filters resulting in fresh water all the time without the hassle of needing to clean your filter every six months.
For other types of filters such as faucet filters, countertop filters and undersink filters a bit more of attention is required. Even though these systems are much smaller in size, they filter the same water contaminants as whole house water filters. A new filter replacement cartridge needs to be inserted every two months due to the high intensity these filters endure on a daily basis. The filters are just as important to replace due to the wear and tear that occurs while filtering.
It is important to have at least one filter replacement cartridge on standby, either for your water filter, fridge filter or even shower filters. They are cheap and are easy to replace. There is almost always a filter replacement indicator built into water filters to let you know when to replace the cartridge and it is very important that you know how to replace these filters as being prompt with your filter maintenance will ensure that your family is still getting the best water possible.
Is it safe to replace a fish tank filter?
I really need to replace my filter! Right now its been used for about a month and Im pretty sure theres some beneficial bacteria on it. But its not even a fish filter. Its one that was used in a turtle tank a long time ago. What I want to do is replace it with a sponge filter, but how? I was thinking of just squeezing out the filter into the water before starting my new one. Any ideas?
There is bacteria in the gravel. Just change the filter.
