Types of Microscopes

Why should stained specimes be viewed only under brightfield?
I understand the purpose of phase contrast and staining, but what would happen if you viewed a stained specimen through a standard microscope under phase contrast?
The answer to your question depends on the amount of light returning from the stained sample into your eye. If you are looking using a standard microscope, then you are only receiving the light reflected back, which may not be very much, as the stain or the sample could absorb light.
However, if the light source is behind the sample, as in brightfield, then you are transmitting light through the sample, and are not dependent on reflection to view the image. Therefore, your optical efficiency will be much larger, since you are avoiding reflective losses.
