Specifications Of Laboratory Scales
As the name suggests laboratory scales are used in schools or medical universities or scientific labs for research and development. Laboratory scales can be both for physical objects or chemical elements. They are used to measure with extreme precision the weight of an object (or its mass, if very small). Usually they have a beam with an attached pointer, a pivot that is essentially friction less and a measuring arm which has fractional weights. The pointer accounts for deviation from the balanced position. As the weight measurements need to be accurate the pan is usually sealed to keep it free of dust particles and moisture. Samples are kept at room temperature to prevent air from entering and bringing with it pollutants. . Even erroneous readings are part and parcel of laboratory scales. These can be caused by friction, gravitational changes, buoyancy, misalignment, evaporation and condensation and seismic disturbances.
Two basic types of laboratory scales will immediately be recognized by laboratory workers: analytical balances and top-loaders. Analytical balances have weigh pans enclosed and are divided into 2 more types: micro balances (accurate to 1 microgram and semi-microbalances (10 micrograms). Top loaders however weigh objects in pans on top of the instrument and give readings ranging from bottom hundreds of grams to several kilograms with accuracy of 1 mg or 0.1 mg. Top loading balances are convenient and quick but don't secure the objects against wind exposure which may lead to errors.
Laboratory scales have become pretty modern and usually have built-in functions for density computation, part counting, statistical study and other computations. Additional features may come at higher price. You have a choice of color screens and touch screens. Faster microprocessors give accurate readings and better repeatability. Hands-free operation gives convenience and saves time. Multiple interface options for connectivity which includes series, parallel, universal bus service (USB) and wireless. The interfaces should also be able to connect to the printer for readily available hard copy. Similarly regulatory compliances also guide the specifications which are very relevant for medical (pharmaceutical) purposes. Evaluations for laboratory scales come from Ingress Protection (IP), National Electronic manufacturers Association (NEMA), and certification from National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP).
There are various other kinds of laboratory scales. An equal arm balance is the simplest kind of beam balance with a uniform bar suspended at the center. An unequal arm balance is suspended off center. A spring balance has a coiled spring fixed to one end and a hook at the other end where weights are applied. Then there is the moisture balance which is used to calculate the moisture substance in a sample way, hence it needs to be very sensitive to the balance. A platform scale has 2 balances attached on opposite side of beam. Problems in repeatability come from changes in lab environments. Hence, you should go for a lab balance which is ahead by a safety factor of 2 or 3. All balances however have limited memory and data processing capabilities which are solved by ‘wedge' software packages that connect the instrument to the lab network for the purpose of automatic data entry.

Take An English Composition Course And Improve Your Writing
Most incoming college freshmen take English Composition to bridge the gaps between the writing skills they learned in their high school English classes and the more advanced skills they will be required to know for their college courses. Writing skills are required for every college major. English, Communications, History, Education, and Philosophy classes are particularly writing-intensive, but students will find that they have to complete reaction papers, research papers, laboratory reflections, and even creative pieces in almost every area of study.
College professors have noted that, particularly in recent years, incoming students are not well-prepared for college writing. While some high schools provide good writing preparation, other schools choose not to focus much on writing essays or research papers. Students will enter college at all different levels of writing readiness. English Composition classes and remedial writing classes are a good way to get all students on the same page before they find themselves struggling with college assignments. Checking out more information on how Test Drive College can help your career is a good move.
One of the first skills you may practice in an English Composition class is writing a persuasive essay. There are countless applications for good persuasive writing, from editorials to dissertations. Students will learn how to craft an effective argument to convince the reader of a particular point.
Comparison and contrast essays are also emphasized in an English Composition class. Many courses will ask students to form comparisons and recognize differences when writing about similar yet separate entities. Literary analyses, frequently assigned by English classes, often make use of the compare/contrast technique. An English Composition class can help students to organize the details of their writing in order to make their points clear when comparing and contrasting two or more subjects, theories, or texts. Analyzing the value of college English will work to your benefit.
During the course of an English Composition class, students will usually be required to read texts and interact with what they have read in the contents of a paper. The paper might be a reader response, where the students react to what they have read, or it might be a more complex essay examining literary elements like theme and symbolism within a text. Interacting with written material in your own words is a crucial part of college, even if you are not an English Literature major.
Many high school graduates have not been given many chances to learn about research, an important aspect of many college courses. A student can expect to write a research paper for nearly every advanced class he or she takes, especially in the humanities. Because there are many pitfalls associated with writing a research paper, from proper documentation and location of sources to the formatting and bibliography, English Composition classes usually cover researching basics.
Many public high schools neglect the basics of grammar, punctuation, and other aspects of effective academic writing. An English Composition class can help students to refresh their memories of these concepts and also to build on their knowledge. Often, peer editing is utilized so students can learn together and help one another to correct mistakes. The world wide web is a good resource for more information about college course online.
Though there is often a disparity between high school English curriculum and what a student is expected to know in college, English Composition classes usually do a good job filling in the holes in a student’s education. After brushing up on some writing basics, most college freshmen are well-prepared to take on the challenges of more advanced coursework.
Chemistry help please!?
An analytical laboratory balance typically measures mass to the nearest 0.1 mg. What energy change would accompany the loss of 0.1 mg in mass?
Were you thinking of changing the mass into energy - ? If so then -look out ! !
Einstein discovered his Mass/Energy equation while working on Relativity:-
E = Mc^2
the speed of light = 299 792 458 m / s which is about = 3 x 10^8
0.1 mg = 1 x 10^ -7 Kg
So if the 0.1mg of mass just disappeared into energy the Energy lost would be
E = 3 x 10^8 x 3 x 10^8 x 1 x 10^-7
E = 9 x 10^9 Joules
[ Note the the standard unit of energy is the joule. You need 4.2 x 10^3 joules to heat one litre of water by one degree Celsius.]
So the Energy evolved would heat 1 Litre of water by 2 x 10^6 (2,000,000) 2 Million degrees .! !
Quite "Energetic" I would say .
