How to Deal With Needlestick Injuries?
Needlestick injuries can expose you to some of the deadly diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or HIV. Most of the individuals who work in the health care centers are highly exposed to such infections because they handle blood and other body fluids of the infected people. Thus, it is essential to be wary of the needlestick injuries, and not take them lightly. As per a recent study, it was found that nearly 600,000 to 800,000 health care workers suffered from needle stick injuries occur in the US every year. These people mostly include those who are in the job of removing garbage, housekeeping, cleaning, tattoo artists, catering, and many more. Such people are more exposed to the risk of being pricked by a needle or syringe disposed in the street, bed or bathroom.
The needlestick injuries can take place accidentally when your finger gets pricked by a sharp contaminated needle. Wearing protective preventive latex gloves can help you greatly reduce the exposure to disease. However, there is no guarantee that you will not be pricked by a needle accidentally. Hence, you must be careful about it. In case, a needle injury takes place, you must follow the right precautionary measures to ensure that your health is not at risk. Here are some tips that should help you rightly respond to any kind of needle stick injury:
At the time of needle injury, you must not try to stop the bleeding forcefully. Instead, allow the excess blood to flow out by squeezing it. This is basically done to reduce the entry of the virus by getting contaminated with the blood. When you let the blood flow out, you will considerably minimize the chances of allowing the viruses enter the main blood stream. You must be really careful about this because once the virus enters the main blood stream this may cause the germs to multiply and increase in number.
You must wash the site of sharp injury with fresh water and splash water to your mouth, nose and skin. You may also wash your eyes using saline, water or sterile irrigants. You may need to seek medical help depending upon the nature of injury. Taking a tetanus shot might be helpful to avoid any unnecessary health concerns.
You must remember not to panic when affected by a needle. The good news is that if you properly follow the protocols, you will not have any sero-conversions of the germs. Studies have proved that sero-conversion rate due to needle stick injuries for HIV is nearly 0.03 percent. The contamination can be effectively avoided with the use of the preventive prophylactic medication. Furthermore, the risk for hepatitis transmission is much higher; hence it is necessary to take quick action as well as preventative measures.
In case of needlestick injuries in hospitals or medical facilities, you must soon undergo a rapid HIV test to confirm your status. If possible ask the person whose blood you have been exposed to undergo the test as well. If the status is negative then there is nothing to worry about.
